Fit To Be Kids (F2BK) was established in September 2010, working with under-served, at-risk youth to provide awareness and field programs addressing modern society symptoms like childhood obesity, which effects more than 12 million children in the United States, alone! Initially, programs where designed to address two main behavior changes at the family unit level, physical activity and nutrition choices. Unknowing of its true impact and significance, the programs were originally designed and developed for the outdoors and held at public parks in the US. Having exposure to nature has been scientifically proven to heal the mind and the body which is why we have recognized the positive effect it has had on all children who participate.
For the last few years, the organization has been successful in recording impact and documenting feedback from parents and children. In addition to quantifiable KPIs, like BMI, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and cardiovascular improvement, and SEL surveys — the data revealed a bigger and broader picture that we are now using to plot, the future vision of F2BK.
So here is the gist of what we learned:
Childhood obesity is merely a symptom of systemic designs that limit access to the outdoors, hence limited physical activity, and that limits access to healthy foods, hence limited intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. We have also learned that experience-based learning is much more effective in long-term behavior change.
…and here is what we are doing about it:
We have created an experience-based learning environment where children can develop necessary social-emotional, cognitive and dexterous skills through specific physical activities and nutrition education that will empower them in leading a balanced and wholesome life.
